CLINICAL
BRAIN TEST
WE HAVE THE ANSWERS THAT TROUBLED AND
BAFFLED YOU:
1. WHY DOES MY CHILD MAKE SO MANY
CARELESS MISTAKES?
2. WHY CAN’T MY CHILD PAY ATTENTION?
3. WHY IS MY CHILD NOT MOTIVATED AND LAZY
TO LEARN?
4. WHY MUST I KEEP REMINDING MY CHILD TO
DO THINGS/SCHOOLWORK?
5. WHY ARE WORDS A TURN OFF FOR MY CHILD?
6. WHY DOES MY CHILD SHUT DOWN WHEN IT
COMES TO SCHOOLWORK?
7. WHY DO PHONICS PROGRAMS NOT WORK FOR
MY CHILD?
8. WHY IS MY CHILD SO CHILDISH? NO
THINKING SKILLS, NO LIFE SKILLS.
Before we can determine the right brain
training program for you or someone you love, we need information. We get this
information by conducting a professional cognitive skills assessment test. This
test enables us to identify specific brain skills weaknesses, then target those
weaknesses with a series of carefully designed brain training exercises. The
test results also give you what you need to make informed decisions about the
value of brain training for you or your family. Singapore Brain Development
Centre’s Cognitive Skills testing is the most time and cost-efficient way of
getting the results you need.
THE TESTS
ARE THE TOOLS
Singapore Brain Development Centre uses a
variety of nationally acclaimed cognitive abilities, achievement, and reading
mastery tests in addition to proprietary screening tools developed to further
enhance identification of individual skill strength and weakness. At our
training centre, such broad, accurate, and definitive testing pinpoints weak
underlying cognitive skills related to poor performance and serves as the
foundation for individualized, effective training.
The professional testing tools we use
include the Woodcock Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities (WJ III-COG) and the
Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement (WJ III-ACH). The WJ III-COG is the gold
standard of cognitive skills testing, and is used by psychologists and
educators across the country to measure brain skills strengths and weaknesses.
KEY
COGNITIVE SKILLS ASSESSED
AUDITORY
PROCESSING
Many people have auditory processing
weaknesses. With these weaknesses, there is difficulty hearing the difference,
order, and the number of sounds in a word.
VISUAL
PROCESSING
This is the ability to form and
manipulate accurate images in your mind. This skill is essential for math, reading
comprehension, and many forms of problem-solving.
MEMORY
SKILLS
Weakness in this cognitive skill is often
the unseen culprit in a student’s inability to follow instructions.
WORD ATTACK
SKILL
This skill enables a person to segment
and articulate new or unfamiliar words. When coupled with an auditory
processing weakness, a student is sure to struggle while reading new material.
GENERAL
PROCESSING SPEED
The ease and speed with which a student
handles incoming information is the basic boundary of his or her learning
efficiency.
LOGIC AND
REASONING
Planning and problem solving require a
person to recognize the connections between things. Weakness in this skill
obscures those connections and bogs down the learning process.

2.SENSORY INTEGRATION & MOTOR SKILLS THERAPY
DID YOU KNOW WE HAVE 7 SENSES?
Human beings have five main senses,
sound, sight, touch, taste, and smell. Sensory integration describes the
process in which the brain takes in information sent by these senses, organizes
it, and sends the message on how to respond accordingly. Besides the five
primary senses, the human body also has two other senses that are not discussed
much but are equally important:
·
Vestibular: a sense
of balance and movement
·
Proprioception: a
sense of body awareness, posture, and position
These two senses make you aware of where
your head and body are. When something is wrong, say you have a stiff neck,
these senses help you to realize you cannot move your head as you normally
would. Once your brain gets this message, you can then make informed decisions,
such as seek remedy for the stiff neck or avoid driving until all your senses
are in coordination.
Sensory integration is critical during
early childhood. Although most children follow the expected developmental
milestones for their age, some have trouble with sensory integration. Sensory
Processing Deficiencies where the brain has trouble receiving and responding to
information are especially common in children in the autism spectrum.
KEY
HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SENSORY INTEGRATION PROGRAM
At SBDC, we work on sensory integration
from a developmental pathway. We investigate and understand the child’s
developmental milestones and find gaps in the milestones. We will support and
facilitate closing the gaps and integrating the various systems to work
simultaneously
INTEGRATED
DEVELOPMENTAL MODEL
Sensory Integration focuses on the
integration of all developmental areas (i.e. social, emotional, motor, sensory,
language and cognitive skills). We promote integrated learning through varied
sensory experiences to ensure a solid foundation for all social, emotional and
academic learning.
EXCITING
SENSORY RICH ENVIRONMENT
The environment is critical when it comes
to sensory stimulation. This is exactly why we have sensory-rich gyms equipped
with trampolines, ladders, swings, balance beams, exercise balls to help your
child to have a unique sensory experience designed to challenge your child’s
senses
FUN AND
PLAY-BASED ACTIVITIES
Even if your child has sensory
deficiencies, he or she is still a child who enjoys playing. We use activities
such as climbing, spinning, swinging, rocking, and bouncing to keep the child
entertained and interested in the therapy. We also use varied games to
stimulate your child’s senses
MAXMISE
EFFECTIVENESS
Other therapies can work very effectively
in conjunction with Sensory Integration and have been successfully used by our
team. These include: the Listening Program, DIR Floortime, Cognitive and
Language Training. They can complement each other well to help the child
develop holistically.

3.DIR FLOORTIME
DIRFloortime® was started by Dr. Stanley
Greenspan, and it is a relationship-based developmental approach which aims to
build respectful, meaningful interactions that are tailored to each child’s
individual differences and promotes each child’s development to their fullest
potential.
The D describes development, and this is
where we look at how the child is developing, emotionally and cognitively.
Establishing a firm understanding of how the child is performing in relation to
the six Functional Emotional Developmental milestones that a child needs to
master. As the child achieves each goal, they experience emotional and
intellectual growth. Students are encouraged to push their interactive skills
by engaging with others through play.
We recommend this program for children
that requires additional support in developing better social communication
skills to interact well with their peers.
THE SIX MILESTONES OF FLOORTIME INCLUDE:
1. Attention and Self-regulation
2. Mutual Engagement in relationships
3. Intentional Two-way communication.
4. Complex and Purposeful communication.
5. Elaborating Emotional Ideas.
6. Bridging Emotional Thinking.
The I describes the unique ways each
person takes in, regulates, responds to, and comprehends the world around them.
Understanding the child’s particular pattern of challenges is essential for
helping them. These challenges may
include differences the child shows in:
·
Sensory processing
capacities
·
Auditory/ Language
processing
·
Visual-spatial
processing, or in
·
Motor planning and
sequencing
The R describes how relationships fuel
our development. The approach assists
therapists in developing their relationship with the child, so they can be
effective in helping the child learn and grow. The approach also aims to ensure
that the child is developing meaningful relationships with people around them.

4.LISTENING THERAPY
OUR
LISTENING PROGRAM
Our listening program targets the
auditory system to stimulate the brain and energises the body – improving your
child’s fundamental ability to process information and learn. We use The
Tomatis® Method, which is a sound therapy, in our listening therapy program.
This method has been designed to enhance listening and communication skills. It
has also been successful in helping people who have coordination and balance
difficulties.
The Tomatis® Method has been validated by
more than 80 research papers, as well as by clinical and scientific studies. It
is a versatile method that has seen many areas of applications. Integrating the
Tomatis® Method in our listening therapy has helped with:
Attention
Deficits
If you have a short attention span, our
listening program will help you to maintain focus. This therapy helps the brain
to identify irrelevant side events and reject them automatically. The result is
a longer attention span. Children who struggle when learning because they are
easily distracted can also benefit.
Learning
Difficulties
Our therapy helps children who struggle
to absorb new information, which ultimately improves academic skills. Some
children are considered slow learners because they take longer to process
information. Sometimes the problem is the absorption of the information, and
not the processing. Listening therapy will help to determine where the
challenge lies, and how to help a child improve.
Autism
Spectrum Disorder
Children in the autism spectrum
experience delays in cognitive development, as well as communication and social
integration challenges. Our listening program helps these children to develop
communication skills through listening, processing the information, and giving
back the best feedback possible. It can help children with autism spectrum
disorders (ASD) and behaviors sometimes associated with it: Asperger’s
syndrome, sensory processing disorder (SPD), or Down syndrome.
Weak Motor
Skills and Coordination
Listening therapy is helpful to children
and adults with weak motor skills. People who have a weak vestibular sense,
which is responsible for balance and movement, use this therapy to improve
coordination, balance, and motor responses.
Difficulties
in Language and Communication
Listening therapy helps patients to
develop vital auditory feedback loop that is essential in communication and
language acquisition.
Emotional
Regulation Problems
The Tomatis® Method has been successful
in people battling anxiety and depression. It stimulates the emotional system
for better memory retention, emotional control, and learning.
Integrated
Music Therapy
Our Integrated Music Therapy is a highly
effective technique that complements and accelerates most pedagogical and/or therapeutic
support. Our Integrated Music Therapy can be used at any age, be it a toddler
or an adult and it also aids in battling other psychological difficulties and
disorders.

5.SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY FOR CHILDREN
Speech and language refer to the ability
to communicate, share and express feelings, give and receive information,
understand ideas and develop thoughts.
The two primary skills needed to master
speech and language are Speaking and Listening.
Speech and language lay an important
foundation in the development of a child’s thinking and learning abilities.
Being able to listen with understanding and communicate (speak) with others, helps
build a child’s social and self-confidence, which contributes to their personal
growth and development. This is where speech therapy in Singapore can be
beneficial.
Toddlers with poor speaking or listening
skills often show signs of speech and language impairment. These children will
also often have comprehension issues, struggle with reading and face learning
difficulties.
KEY
HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SPEECH THERAPY PROGRAM
Conducted
by Senior Language Therapists
Your child is in competent hands with our
senior language therapists. A speech specialist helps children with
communication difficulties and is equipped with the expertise to help children
perform better in school by improving their language capabilities.
Through our speech classes for toddlers,
a speech specialist will identify specific goals and interventions tailored
specifically to your child’s needs. During speech classes, therapists may use
images, novels, or language-based activities to encourage language development.
Active
partnership with parents
We believe in actively working with and
supporting not only the child but also the parents. This is because parents
play a critical role in their child’s speech and language development. We offer
continual advice and home therapy plans to help accelerate your child’s speech
and language development. We strive to always work alongside you to assist your
child in their learning and development.
