1.Under 5's
WELCOME TO THE UNDER 5's
(Training: Saturday 4.00pm - 5.00pm)
[Head Coach: Ben]
U5s is the youngest age group at Dragons
Rugby, so this will be the first introduction to the club for many families.
This will likely be your child’s first
experience getting involved in playing rugby and, as coaches, our most
important job is to make sure that the U5s have FUN!
Our 60-minute sessions are a balance of
skills training and games to keep the young ones engaged.
At this age, our goal is to introduce the
basics of the game, catching and passing, running with the ball, communication
& the concept of attack and defence. Many kids will also be experiencing a
team environment for the first time and we spend time working on both
individual skills and team situations. We keep things simple and repetitive,
with progression on certain skills as we move on through the year. The
highlights of every session are the Player of the Week Troph & icy bonbon
time!
A word of advice, if you are a keen rugby
parent, your enthusiasm may sometimes overshadow that of your child, we know
ours did at the start! Give them time to get used to the environment. They can
simply observe if they feel comfortable for the first couple of weeks sitting
with Mum or Dad or doing half the activities. We're more than happy for Mum or
Dad to join in to help ease their involvement into the group. We have kids of
all backgrounds, shapes, sizes, and skills levels, and encourage anyone to come
down to training and have a go.
The Dragons are a very family-oriented
club, all of the coaches are volunteer Mums and Dads, and we get lots of
participation from parents in our sessions, which we actively encourage. The
kids love it when the parents join in!
If you want to meet the U5s and have a
go, bring your water bottle and come along on Saturday afternoons to UWCSEA
East Campus Tampines. Training time is detailed above (please arrive 10 minutes
earlier).

2.Under 6's
(Training: Saturday 4.00pm - 5.00pm)
[Head Coach: Joel]
[Team Manager: Victoria]
For many of you bringing your U6 boy/girl
along to get them involved in playing rugby, this will be your first
interaction with the club, a very warm Dragons welcome to you!
At this early age, the goal is to
introduce the basics of the game - catching and passing, running with the ball,
communication, the concept of attack and defense. For many kids, they will also
be experiencing a team environment for the first time and we spend time working
on both individual skills and in team situations.
As coaches our most important job is to
make sure that the U6's have FUN! With that in mind, we try to balance our 1
hour sessions evenly between skills and games to keep the young ones engaged.
We keep things simple and repetitive with progression on certain skills as we
move on through the weeks. There is
little doubt the highlight of every training is firstly the Player of the Day
(where ironically, we get everyone sitting nice and quietly awaiting the
coaches' decision) and then it's icy bonbon time!
One word of advice, if you are a keen
rugby parent, your enthusiasm may sometimes overshadow that of your boy/girl,
we know ours did at the start! Give them time to get into the environment, they
can simply observe if they feel comfortable for the first couple of weeks

We welcome and boys and girls with an
interest in making new friends and learning about rugby. With the emphasis on
fun, we learn to run, pass, tackle (touch), form our Dragon wall and respect
the whistle! Whether you’re new to the sport or an old hand.

As coaches our most important job is to
make sure that the U8's have FUN! With that in mind, we try to balance our
training sessions evenly between core rugby skills along with games to keep the
young ones engaged. We keep things simple and repetitive with progression on
certain skills as we move through the year. Hopefully the kids are just having
fun (but secretly learning rugby). The kids also learn good life skills, such
as listening, working as a team to achieve goals together, hand-eye
coordination and there is little doubt the highlight of every training is the
Player of the Day Trophy, then it's icy bonbon time!

5.Dragons Under 9's
(Training: Saturday 4.00pm - 5.15pm)
[Head Coach: Neil]
[Team Manager: Dave]
The Dragon's U9 Squad are passionate
about having fun and this is the year that play transitions from Touch to
Contact. During the year we focus on
making contact rugby safe and fun for our young Dragons. Players are taught the correct technique to
tackle in a safe and controlled environment, by IRB trained and experienced
coaches. The concept of a ruck and maul
is introduced as players are taught how to contest the ball at the tackle. The
U9 squad is a mix of players who started in the U5’s through to kids who didn’t
know what a Rugby ball was until they joined this year.
Our goal as coaches is to give the kids
the skills and the love of the game that will keep them playing and enjoying
rugby for the rest of their lives.
Our Dragons participate in two Singapore
Mini-rugby leagues per year with each league consisting of 8 games played over
4 weekends. There are also two 2-3 Singapore tournaments per year and for those
willing to travel we participate in two international tournaments each year.
Each tournament averages 6 games over the weekend.
The coaches are all volunteer Dads, with
kids on the squad, who are passionate about sport and have completed
International Rugby Board (IRB) Coaching and Referee Certifications or other
recognised coaching/training qualifications.
Kids are welcome to come to trial classes
before committing, so they can get comfortable with their fellow Dragons. Training is every Saturday at UWC East
playing field, if you’d like to come for a trail, please arrive 10 minutes
prior to training start.

6.Under 10's
(Training: Saturday 5.15pm - 6.30pm)
[Head Coach: Brad]
[Team Manager: Nyree]
The Dragons U10 team is a great mix of
seasoned players and new teammates. Many of the boys have been with Dragons
Rugby Club since U5’s and we have players who may never have played rugby at
all. Our goal is to make our training sessions as much fun as possible, whilst
imprinting both rugby skills and sportsmanship. Our coaches can adapt each skill
into levels that each player can grasp, building in greater skill levels as
each player improves. This is all done whilst enjoying some fitness skills and
growing as a team player.
A typical training session starts with
our Dragons Identity and then swiftly into warm-up. Once all the players are
suitably stretched, we focus on fitness. All our fitness sessions involve core
rugby skills and mindset and of course, fun. We follow up with more involved
rugby skills, checking where the natural talent of each player resides. This
allows us to place each Dragon into a team position that suits them physically
& mentally.
Each training session ends with a short
game to ensure that the skills from the training session can be brought into a
real match. This is always awesome fun for both new and seasoned U10 Dragons.
Feel free to join us for free trial
sessions (register online with Dragons). We look forward to welcoming you into
the U10 Team and the Dragons Rugby Family.
Our coaches want to give our young
players the skills and love of this great game that will keep them playing
& enjoying rugby for the rest of their lives.
We look forward to meeting you.

7.Dragons Rugby Club - Under 11's Years Old
(Training: Saturday 5.30pm - 6.45pm)
[Head Coach: Dean]
[Team Manager: Neha]
Dragons Under 11’s are continuing their
journey to perfect their skills playing contact rugby. Our boys look forward to learning skills and playing
games every Saturday. During the year,
we focus on making contact rugby safe and fun for our young Dragons. The players are taught how to pass &
catch, run & dodge, make and take tackles in a safe and controlled
environment. For our Dads and Mums who
help out during the sessions, it provides a great bonding environment for the
child and the parent. Our energetic and
enthusiastic boys have fun and engaging sessions every time they meet up! It is always wonderful to see our Dragons
play, learn and grow together as a team!

8.Under 12's
(Training: Saturday 2.30pm - 4.00pm)
[Head Coach: Gavin]
[Team Manager: David]
Welcome to Dragons U12 for the new season
and welcome back to all our returning families and rugby players. We're looking
forward to building on the strengths we finished last season with and
continuing to welcome more new players to the team.
Our focus is to develop a love for rugby
and all the benefits that come from team sport. In Under 12's players are still
developing an awareness of the game of rugby, what the strategies are, decision
making and what each position involves. Enjoying the game and playing it safely
are our top priorities.
Making new friends, practicing new skills
and learning about the ups and downs of competitive sport are all a part of
being great team players.
We have a team of coaches and managers
dedicated to the job of making sure everyone's looking forward to Saturday
afternoon rugby. Our main training is at the UWC East ground in Tampines but we
will have matches, visit other clubs to have friendly games at various weekend
times and enter tournaments throughout the year.
One of the greatest things this game can
provide is the joy of being part of a team,
working hard and succeeding as a group. Succeeding does not always mean
winning, so we will teach the kids why this is so important throughout the
year.
Training will involve in small parts the
following:
·
Fitness training
·
Strength training
·
Ball skills
·
Individual skills
·
Team play
·
Leadership
·
Teamwork
I hope you're excited to come and play as
we have a great bunch of kids ready to welcome more to the team.
