FAQ
1.Babies and Toddlers - Play Stage (18mths to 3 yrs)
Course:
Play Stage
Age: 18 to 36 months
Location: East
Teachers: Shahnaz Alkaff
Play Stage is great fun for
both children and adults – where children gain their first experience of a
learning atmosphere. Children are introduced to the basic rules of interaction:
sitting, standing, taking turns and sharing, in preparation for school.
Imaginative play – through drama, stories, puppets and music – helps develop
confidence, whilst clarity of speech is worked on through basic speech sounds.
Art and craft activities are also included to encourage both fine and gross
motor skills.
The aim is to create a safe,
fun, stimulating and imaginative environment in which the children can learn
and the parent-child relationship is enriched.
The emphasis in this class is
the building of the individual, allowing the children to develop the confidence
needed to emerge from the safety of the group. Through these classes, children
develop naturally towards classes attended independently of a caregiver.

2.Babies and Toddlers - Baby Stage (6 to 18 months)
Course:
Baby Stage
Age: 6 to 18 Months
Location: East
Teachers: Shahnaz Alkaff
If there were a single year
where human beings could be said to take their greatest leap in development it
must be from 6 to 18 months. During this stage we seem to go through nearly our
entire evolutionary process; from sitting up for the first time, to crawling on
all fours, then walking upright and finally talking.
We seek to guide a child’s
earliest development through a rich, learning environment in which baby and
parent or caregiver can flourish. We aim to provide the parent – any child’s
most important teacher – with new skills and tools, together with a warm parenting
community support and resources for a host of childrearing challenges are
readily available.
All babies MUST be
accompanied by one adult, and we strongly encourage parents to attend.

3.Drama - Creative Drama (3½ to 12 years)
Course:
Creative Drama
Age: 3.5 to 12 years
Location: Portsdown / East
Teachers: Julie Gouin,
Mathilde Bagein, Vicky Letchemanan
Creative Drama is at the
heart and soul of the Centre Stage ethos. It is process driven, rather than
performance-based drama – the emphasis and the value is in the journey rather
than the outcome.
We bring to life situations,
stories and characters by ‘playing out’ the narrative – using structured play
in a highly fun and interactive way. Skills applied and gained from these
classes are broad and immense: Confidence, communication, quick thinking,
problem-solving, flexibility, teamwork, an ability to improvise, apply
creativity and imagination as well as develop social and emotional skills!
Suitability: These classes
suitable for all children from the under-confident to build self-esteem to the
real drama enthusiast.
Creative Drama is broken down
into the following stages:
Course: Creative Drama
Introductory Stage
Age: 3 ½ to 4 years
The classes are meant as an
introduction to drama and often contain children who have moved up from Play
Stage 2. The introductory stage was devised and written to make the transition
from our morning play stage classes to Stage One as smooth as possible and to
help students settle into the idea of drama.
Aims of the class
The main focus is exploring
drama by taking a book or story as the stimulus. We read or tell the story in
class, discuss it and either dramatize it or take a theme from the book and
explore it using the student’s thoughts and ideas. We look at movement, encouraging
the children to be aware of their physicality, the way in which they move their
bodies, and begin to help them develop physical control and awareness. Music is
often included, using familiar songs and routines. As well as building
confidence we are trying to create an atmosphere free from pressure where the
child has a chance to develop their imagination and a forum in which they can
begin to express their ideas.
The introductory stage is an
opportunity for the children to learn to lead, take turns, work as a team,
explore different emotions and develop social skills as they begin to
understand and put in to practice the very important skills necessary for
drama.
The classes are 1 hour long
and are unaccompanied.
Course: Creative Drama Stages
1 – 3
Age: 4 to 7 years
Here, using games and group
improvisations the students work towards developing good listening skills,
turn-taking and the need to work together as a team. We gently introduce the
preliminary skills of drama and encourage an appreciation and love of
literature.
The children learn through
improvised drama, music, mime and movement drawn from favourite books, poems,
and stories. They start within the safety net of the group and as
self-confidence develops, begin to take on individual roles.
Here the students start to
acquire the basic skills of drama, the need for clear speech and an expressive
voice and body
Aims of the class: To develop
self-confidence, sociability, expression, creativity and imaginative skills.
Course: Creative Drama Stages
4 – 6
Age: 8 to 12 years
With these intermediate drama
classes, we build on the skills learned in the earlier stages but give greater
attention to acting skills. We introduce theatre styles and use play scripts,
scenes, monologues, duologues and improvisation to develop the students’
physical, vocal and mental skills.
As the students develop, they
can choose to audition for our performance-based – On Stage! Course to put the
acquired skills into action.
Aims of the class
To develop acting skills,
self-confidence, sociability, expression, creativity and imaginative skills.

4.Drama - On Stage! Acting (8 to 12 years)
Course:
On Stage! Acting
Age: 8 to 12 years
Location: Portsdown &
East
Duration: 2 hours
Teachers: Julie Gouin,
Mathilde Bagein, Peter Hodgson
On Stage! Acting is designed
specifically for young actors who show promise and who are keen to develop
their skills as performers. The course offers two performances a year, one an
“in house” project performed in the studio and the other is staged in a
theatre.
Auditions
In order to maintain a high
standard, performers must audition for this course and it must be noted that if
a performer is accepted on the course there must be a high level of commitment
and attendance.
Please note, in order for
Centre Stage to maintain these standards we can only take those who show
particular promise. Students should therefore be advised that they might not be
accepted on the course. If this is the case, then we recommend that the student
should continue hourly classes in order to further develop their skills.

5.Musical Theatre - Musical Theatre Intermediate (8 to 12 years+)
Course:
Musical Theatre Intermediate
Age: 8 to 12 years
Location: Portsdown
(Wednesday, Fridays, Saturday) & East Coast (Mondays & Saturdays)
Teachers: Liisa Raitio, Molly

Musical Theatre Intermediate Combines
Creative Drama with song and dance. It is the next step up from Musical Theatre
Juniors, and is part of Centre Stage’s Creative Pathway – the value and
importance will be in the process and not the product.
The main aim of these classes
is to build confidence and develop basic musical theatre skills in a process
driven environment.
This course combines
movement, dance and song with a through line of Creative Drama and character
work which we believe forms the basis for all performance work. Students will
use this added element to build belief in the characters they are playing – a
fundamental skill required in Musical Theatre.
Unlike our Performance training
based “On Stage” courses – the key aims of Musical Theatre Intermediate is to
build confidence and express ourselves creatively in a safe space… learning
valuable life skills in a process driven environment, rather than focusing on
presentations or performances.
Aims of the class: To develop acting, music and
