Parents who grew up in the 70s and 80s simply do not understand why their children bring home scores of 60% and 70% when they have invested so much in creating the right linguistic environment for their children. After all, English is the language used both at home and in school. By all measures, English is the de facto ‘mother tongue’ for our children, right? So, why are our children performing badly in English examinations?
Remember that the English syllabus has changed dramatically. Remember also that English is tested at a very high, first-language level. Examinations in Primary school, especially the Upper Primary levels, test students’ grasp of complex grammatical constructions which almost never occur in naturally-occuring speech. (When was the last time you heard someone say, “She had had dinner by the time she came home.
English compositions that are filled with stock ‘good’ phrases and expressions memorised from a book do not work! Why? First, they earn no Content marks, because they do not carry the elements of plot or story. Second, memorised chunks of text shoehorned into poorly constructed sentences sound stilted at best and egregiously awkward at worst. In neither scenario will high Language marks be awarded.
